Shunryu Suzuki Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind give away

Apparently, by Shambhala’s mysterious standards, last months contest went well, so they’ve arranged for another one. I don’t think we should get used to this, but let’s enjoy the privilege while we can.

There’s a 40 year anniversary edition out of the spiritual classic: Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mindby Shunryu Suzuki (here’s my review). Not to be mistaken for the Buddhist scholar D.T. Suzuki.

I had actually never read the book, so Shambhala made sure I got a copy. I wonder if I’ll ever get used to that privilege?

Anyhow, it’s a classic and it’s probably true, as said in one of the introductions, that the hundreds of amazon reviews are a better testimony than anything I could say. However, I will try when I’ve finished reading it.

Before I do so however, let’s get to the give away. I have several questions for you all. You have to answer the first one, for obvious reasons, and at least one other.

  1. do you want to get a gift copy of zen mind beginners mind?
  2. if you’ve read the book, what’s your favorite quote ?
  3. what do you think is the relationship between zen and emotion?
  4. if you haven’t read the book, why do you want to?

One condition to the give away I did not mention last time: you have to answer on my blog, not through email. While I will occasionally go to the trouble of posting comments made through email on the blog, it does create extra work for me, which I don’t appreciate and will certainly not be rewarding with the gift of a free book. I do have more to do than I have time for.

Like last time, you don’t need to give me your address. Just leave a valid email address as you fill in the comment form. I will send that email address to the Shambhala people and they’ll take it from there.

  1. Hi,

    Interesting contest.

    1. Yes, please I would like a gift copy of zen mind, beginner’s mind.

    3. I think zen is emotion and emotionn is zen. To feel is to be zen. To not feel is to be zen. I’m nit sure you can separate the two.

    Thanks,

    Frank

  2. do you want to get a gift copy of zen mind beginners mind?
    yes

what do you think is the relationship between zen and emotion?

If someone shouts at me I whisper back

  3. I am interested in a copy if no one else is. I read it over 10 years ago but do not recall anything except that I liked it. I think the relationship between Ch’an/Zen and emotion is, if ‘ch’an’ means ‘meditation,’ then ch’an helps keep your emotions clear… and if ‘Ch’an’ means its school of Buddha Dharma , then Ch’an has various practices that express emotions, like various arts, and the combination of meditation and expression is very helpful.

  4. I’d like to read the book to study the Zen from different view points. Born in the country where Buddhism is the norm, I still don’t get to know Buddhism … until a year ago.
I just absorb the teaching from the intelligent, logical level naturally with great interest. Unbeknown to me that such teaching is now helping so much to weather all the hardship, disappointment in my life. It helps me seeing things for what they really are, how to deal with them in a compassionate ways, and, the most important thing is, understand myself.
I am now ready to explore the inner-me which most people call ZEN.
As I understand the it, ZEN and emotion are 2 different entities. The ZEN is “who you are” and the emotion is the effect of some causes. The ZEN is perpetual whereas the emotion is short-live. When interact with any and/or all of human’s senses, emotion is the result. The emotion is conditioned as we grow up and, thus, depending on the external environment. The ZEN is not. The true nature of the ZEN is stillness and unobstructed. My 2 cents.

    Regards,

    Tam

  5. Hello, I am a wonderer and this is the first time I had found your site. It is very intriguing, and no I did not find it just for the give-a-way.

    1. I feel that I would greatly benefit from acquiring this book. I am one who loves to be mindful, and those around me love that I am. They often come up to me and ask for reading material even though I tell them that all you need is around you, or in you. This will broaden my horizons so that I can explain it to another set of minds that want to know.

2.I have not yet read it.

3.Zen and Emotion are like two sides of a pea pod. If you were to get rid of Zen out of Emotions, the one side, all of the peas, your concentration and thoughts because they are feelings, fall out. If you have Zen without Emotions then, oh boy, you have a confusing ever twisting and speeding up cycle of thoughts as they fall to the ground, splatter and try to throw more on top until you can just see colors not realizing the sidewalk is there.

    4. The reasoning for me wanting to read this book is because it may open my eyes to something I missed, and it may help others in our way towards mindfulness.

  6. 1. do you want to get a gift copy of zen mind beginners mind?
yes if there are any left
    2. if you’ve read the book, what’s your favorite quote ?
if haven’t read the book but am familiar with the quote: “In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, in the expert mind there are few” and that stirred my interest in the book.
    3. what do you think is the relationship between zen and emotion?
I’m just starting to explore zen and in my beginner’s mind, I would compare zen and emotion to water and waves…
    4. if you haven’t read the book, why do you want to?
    …to understand more about zen.
